MEN’S DOWN JACKETS: PREMIUM, NOT PRETENTIOUS

Rugged style shouldn’t mean you have to sacrifice excellent craftsmanship. That’s why we’ve created rugged leather down jackets that are premium, not pretentious; high quality, not highbrow. The down insulation provides the warmth you need, and the 100% genuine lambskin leather is extraordinarily soft and wearable. The natural, lightweight layers of the lambskin give it a distinctive, velvety texture (and we offer both light brown leather and dark brown leather). Even though it’s thin and lightweight, lambskin leather still keeps out the cold, making it the ideal material for our men’s down jackets. (Click here to learn more about lambskin and other soft leathers.)

We’ve included details like an interior chest pocket, durable polyester lining, and antique brass finishing on the zip front closure and zippered hand pockets. And, heads up – our men’s down jackets are crafted with a slimmer fit, so check the sizing guide (you’ll probably want to size up).

EXPLORE OUR SUITE OF MEN’S OUTERWEAR

Buffalo Jackson offers a full collection of quality men’s outerwear in various styles and materials. In all of our designs, we strive to honor the old-school values of hard work, grit, and the spirit of adventure.

Leather Jackets & Vests

We craft our leather jackets and vests using various types of leather including lambskin, sheepskin, and cow leather. Each type of leather offers distinctive properties that normally boil down to texture, appearance, and how the leathers are processed.

Buffalo Jackson leather outerwear includes men’s down jackets, down vests, western vests, bomber jackets, motorcycle jackets, and more.

Waxed Canvas Jackets & Vests

Waxed canvas takes all the best features of canvas, and then adds some valuable features. The wax coating amps up the wind resistance, repels water, and even ages beautifully. Like high-quality leather, waxed canvas looks and feels better the more you use it, developing a fine patina over time.

We have a couple of styles of waxed canvas jackets including hooded jackets and a waxed canvas trucker jacket. We also make waxed canvas vests with a sherpa collar, and those come in light & dark gray or green & khaki.

Wool Jackets

Our styles of wool jackets include the flannel-lined Wesley wool jacket with a more tailored fit like a riding jacket, our heavyweight Ellis wool jacket with quilted interior and sherpa collar, and our Yukon wool shirt jacs

DOWN JACKET CARE & CLEANING TIPS

Proper care is key to getting the most of any men’s down jacket, whether it’s made with leather or not. Since ours are crafted with leather, we’ll focus on that here. Follow these 5 basic steps for cleaning your leather down jacket:

*Always spot-check each step before proceeding with the full jacket!

1. Dust.

Use a soft cloth in a light circular motion to gently wipe away any dust or oil buildup on the jacket exterior.

2. Clean the interior.

Remember that cleaning the inside of your jacket is as important as preserving the outside. Sweat buildup on the interior can eventually break down the jacket lining and compromise the exterior.

Mix two teaspoons of mild liquid detergent with warm water to create a gentle cleaning solution. Saturate a soft sponge or cloth in the solution; then wring it out so it’s damp, but not soaking wet. Turn the jacket inside-out, and use the sponge or cloth to clean the interior, paying close attention to the cuffs, collars, and underarms. Leave the jacket inside-out, and hang to air dry. (Do not apply direct heat like from a hair dryer.)

3. Clean the exterior.

*If your jacket exterior isn't excessively dirty, skip to step 4.

You can use the mild soap solution from step 2 to clean the outside of your leather down jacket. Saturate a clean soft sponge or cloth in the solution; then wring it out so it’s damp, but not soaking wet. (It’s very important to use as little moisture as possible.) Lightly blot the jacket, and remember to feather your blots to avoid leaving watermarks on the leather. Do not rub or scrub!

4. Rinse

Saturate a clean cloth with a small amount of clean water, wring out the excess, and wipe down the jacket exterior. Be sure to remove any soap residue if you’ve used a cleaning solution, and remember to use the smallest amount of moisture required.

5. Dry

Finally, pat the leather dry with a soft, dry towel, and hang it somewhere cool and out of direct sunlight until it is completely dry. Do not use direct heat (like a hair dryer) to try to speed up the drying time.

HOW DO YOU BREAK IN A LEATHER DOWN JACKET?

Since our men’s down jackets are made with soft lambskin leather, they don’t really require much breaking in. But, here are 3 easy tips if you need them:

1. Wear it.  It has to be said that we think the best way to break in any leather jacket is the old fashioned way – keep wearing it.

2. Roll it up.  Use your hands to tightly roll up your leather down jacket into a ball, then unroll and repeat.

3. Flex in it.  Repeat simple moves like arm circles and pushups to accelerate the “wearing” effect.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

1. How do I choose the right size for a men's down jacket?

When considering men's down jackets, particularly those with a slimmer fit like ours, it's essential to consider your layering preferences as well as chest and arm measurements. Review our sizing guide and consider sizing up if you plan to wear thicker layers underneath — this ensures a comfortable fit that accommodates movement.

2. Are men's down jackets suitable for extreme cold?

Yes, our men's down jackets are designed for warmth and comfort, featuring down insulation that effectively traps heat. The combination of soft lambskin leather and down insulation makes these jackets ideal for cold weather, providing a cozy barrier against the chill.

3. Can I wear a leather down jacket in wet conditions?

While leather provides some degree of natural resistance to moisture, it's not fully waterproof. Our leather down jackets should hold up well in light rain or snow, but in heavy wet conditions, additional waterproof gear is recommended to protect both the leather and the down insulation.

4. How should I clean and care for my leather down jacket?

Caring for your leather down jacket involves gentle cleaning with a mild soap solution, avoiding excessive moisture, and allowing the jacket to air dry naturally away from direct heat sources. For the interior, a damp (not soaking wet) sponge or cloth can be used for cleaning, paying particular attention to areas prone to sweat buildup. Exterior care should focus on light blotting rather than scrubbing to preserve the leather's integrity.

5. How does the warmth of lambskin leather compare to other materials?

While thin and lightweight, lambskin leather is exceptionally good at blocking the cold, thanks to its natural insulating properties. Its unique texture and the additional down insulation in our jackets further enhance warmth, making lambskin an ideal choice for stylish yet functional winter wear.

6. How do I store my down jacket when not in use?

Proper storage is critical to maintaining the shape and condition of a men's down jacket. Hang it on a wide, padded hanger in a cool, dry place. Avoid compressing the jacket in tight spaces or storage bags, as this can affect the down's loft and the jacket's overall shape.
